Talks and Walks

Walks:  each summer I put on a  programme of walks around  North Laine. If you want to discover why North Laine is a Conservation Area or to find out about North Laine's historic buildings and the people who have lived here, then why not join me one one of my walks. Details of this year’s walks can be found here.

The tours start outside Brighton Museum and after a 100 minute tour of the historic North Laine  return to Church Street. In between you will learn about the buildings of historic importance, and about characters like Tom Sayers, Heavyweight Champion boxer of Britain and North Laine resident and Anita Roddick who started her business empire in Kensington Gardens. You will learn how North Laine was Brighton's industrial for over 100 years and where water, wood and animals were transformed into beer, furniture and meat.

There is no need to register for the walks. You can just turn up. The cost of the walk is  £5 which  which goes towards North Laine  Community Association funds and  maintaining this website.

‘Discover  the North Laine leaflets’: there are also leaflets available which take you on  a self guided tour of North Laine. These leaflets are available in  The Visitor Centre in  the Toy Museum in Trafalgar Street and Raining Books, Trafalgar Street.

Talks:  As  well as the guided walks I am available to give talks on any aspect of North Laine history. It is also  possible to  combine  a talk with a walk. Contact me using the form to the  right for further details.

About myself: My name is Peter Crowhurst and I have lived in North Laine for  over thirty years. During that time, I  was chair of the North Laine  Community Association for nine years. I have given talks on the history of the  area and each summer put on a programme of  guided walks around the area. I helped to produce the  very successful  ‘North Laine Book’ and also the leaflet, ‘Discover the  North Laine’.
